New year, new semester, new you! It's time for a fresh start. What is something that you want to accomplish? What do you want to do differently this time around? Remember that you can do ANYTHING you put your mind to.

Set SMART goals. SMART stands for:

  1. Specific - Make your goal as clear as possible
  2. Measurable - Find a way to keep track of your progress towards the main goal
  3. Attainable - Be sure that your goal is within reach
  4. Realistic/Relevant - Ensure that you can commit to your goal and that it’s impactful to your future in some way
  5. Timed - Give yourself a deadline

If you’re SMART, then you can be very effective in accomplishing your goals, especially ones pertaining to both school and career.

Students often feel pressured to determine a major and career path right away. If you haven’t decided on a major, don’t stress! You need 120 credits to graduate from any accredited four-year program. Here’s a POSSIBLE breakdown:

General Education (Gen Eds): 45 credits Major Requirements: 45 credits Electives: 30 credits

If you’re still undeclared, take advantage of your electives to complete courses in different fields. Take interesting classes, fun classes, and weird ones. Just do it all! Depending on how your school works, 30 elective credits can equal ten courses. While that may not seem like a lot, that’s ten different fields to dip into and identify new passions.

Your ultimate goal should be to finish school with as much exposure as possible. Whether you’re a freshman or a senior about to graduate, your power is knowing what options you have during and after college. Continue to be SMART in tackling this goal, and watch how your new character development unfolds.

Good luck this semester! We’ll always be here to support you through your college and career journey. Oh, and happy new year!!!
