Day In The Life: Meet Asana Social Media Marketer Josh Torres

8:00am: I wake up and enjoy some quiet reflection time while taking Wes, my formosan mountain dog, for a walk. Next up: I meditate, grounding myself in what I’m grateful for and what I want to achieve. I’ve been practicing meditation for about five years now, and it has become a really important part of my routine. I take a quick shower before hitting the road.

9:00am: I opt to ride BART to work instead of driving so I can have a chance to read. Right now, I’m working through the new Black Panther series by Ta-Nehisi Paul Coates, whose writing and activism I really admire. When I’m a few stops from the office, I open up the Asana mobile app to check what’s on my plate today. As a social media marketer for software that’s all about streamlining workflow and communications, it’s natural for me to message our product to the world because I’ve found it so useful for tracking my own tasks and projects. I probably use Asana for 10 hours a day, whether it’s focusing on work projects or just planning activities I want to do with friends, or tracking things I want to buy for my apartment, etc.

9:45am: I get to Asana just in time to catch the tail end of breakfast, provided by our awesome culinary team. I try not to focus on work while I’m eating, but once I’m done, I head over to my desk and check Asana on my computer before perusing my Twitter feed (my go-to news source). I check up on a few of the social justice warriors I follow – Coates, Francesca Ramsey, and DeRay Mckesson – and also top of tech news via Hunter Walk, a venture capitalist who has a really human voice on Twitter.

10:00am: Since my job is all about creating and sharing content, I spend most of my morning consuming news. I start with TheSkimm, which does a great job of consolidating news in an email summary. More of my high-level strategy work happens in the afternoon, when my creative juices are flowing the most.

12:30pm: I eat a salad (heavier meals slow down my productivity) and go for a walk on my lunch break. I’m lucky to work somewhere where employees have a lot of flexibility in how we spend our time.

1:30pm: I work with the design team to create some cool new design assets for our #thankateammate campaign, which we originally launched on Asana’s social channels last year. I’m really excited that we’re sharing it again, since I think it’s important to share gratitude in the workplace and to set up opportunities and systems that encourage that.

2:30pm: I get a workout in. Asana employees get a free membership to a gym that’s a 10-minute walk away, so I try to make it there in the mid-afternoon to beat the 5pm rush (and to have a break in the workday). I do 45 minutes on the elliptical, followed by some weight training.

3:45pm: Late afternoon is my “go zone” – uninterrupted working time. I focus on building out an influencer target list by researching who our top influencers are and developing a list for us to reference. I also come up with more concrete criteria around who we want to have on the list moving forward. Much of my work is strategy and vision for building Asana’s brand presence on social platforms. As of late, I’ve really focused on community building and engagement, making sure our brand messaging is being delivered in the proper voice and tone to our community of users, as well as folks interested in Asana as a brand.

4:15pm: I carve out time to devote to projects outside the immediate scope of my job, a lot of which includes my commitment to diversity efforts. I launched Hispanic Heritage Month at work and am working on finding more ways for our People of Color employee resource group to get more involved in the community. Next week, I’m speaking at the Latino Tech Summit at Santa Clara University.

5:00pm: I try to make sure that all of our social media platforms have scheduled posts in place (we use Buffer to help with this and pre-schedule things so I don’t have to take work home with me and constantly be monitoring performance). Working late definitely happens now and then, but it’s generally pretty doable to get home early to Wes and my partner, and tonight’s no different.

6:30pm: Time for dinner and drinks at L’emigrante, a wine bar in San Francisco’s Mission District where my partner and I have a lot of memories. We enjoy a cheese plate, some bruschetta, and, of course, some amazing wine.

9:00pm: While my partner and I are big TV buffs, we’ve been carving out one night a week to not consume media. We use this time to converse, read, and write. It’s a nice way to wind down. Though we’ll definitely be watching Jane the Virgin tomorrow.
