Introducing New Stock Photos (And Can’t-Miss Advice From The Interns We Featured)

On a hot Saturday afternoon at a Breather space on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, we gathered a few dozen incredible interns from the Jopwell community – students from across the country who spent their summers interning everywhere from the trading floors of Goldman Sachs and BlackRock, to the newsrooms of The New York Times and The TODAY Show, and more. We’d enlisted this group to help expand The Jopwell Collection, the stock photography campaign we launched in April to increase the visibility of our community of Black, Latino/Hispanic, and Native American students and professionals in the workplace.

Photographed by Cornell University student Kelechi Mpamaugo, the resulting images aim to capture and celebrate the experiences of these interns (who, by the way, we are quite sure will be pictured leading actual boardrooms in the near future).

Now, with the release of The Jopwell Collection’s “Intern Edition” gallery, we invite editors, producers, marketers, and bloggers to explore and leverage the images in the Collection. As with our initial collection, you’re free to download and publish the images under a Creative Commons 4.0 Attribution License (we just ask that you visibly credit “Jopwell” and tag "@Jopwell" and "#LetThemSeeUs" when promoting the images on social media).

Our afternoon with these interns left us incredibly inspired. In the spirit of open-sourcing their knowledge, here are a handful of tips they shared for all those interested in applying for and landing amazing experiences themselves. Because how often do you get to hear from those who’ve taken the first steps toward building careers at some of America’s most prestigious companies?

“Do your homework. Before going into interviews, I facilitated and nurtured my connections and relationships. That meant finding and talking to people already working at a company, as well as those who’d completed the marketing internships I was pursuing.”
– Kirby Porter, Harvard University class of 2018, PepsiCo Marketing intern

“Make your resumé tell a story. Display common themes and interests connected to the roles you’re applying for. I applied to a consulting internship, for example, so I highlighted organizations I am a part of and that forced me to develop and use my critical thinking skills.”
– Tyler Davis, Carnegie Mellon University class of 2019, Pricewaterhouse Coopers Start Advisory intern

“It's not only about your technical skills. If you bring your most authentic self to the interview and don’t get bogged down in all the Do I know how to define all these terms that everyone who is interviewing me already knows? and Do I have all these technical skills?, you'll be better off. There are things you just won't learn in the classroom, and companies are willing to teach them to you.”
– Gale McFarlane, Johns Hopkins University class of 2018, PNC Financial Services intern

“View campus recruiters as a resource, not just people who are 'grading' your résumé. Asking them questions won’t make you come off as uninformed – it shows how interested you are in the opportunity to contribute.”
– Themba Shongwe, Skidmore College class of 2018, BlackRock iShares Capital Markets summer analyst

“Apply for positions outside of your comfort zone. You never know what opportunities you may find.”
– Arianna Neal, Yale University class of 2019, DoSomething.org/TMI Strategy intern
